Barbaric, heinous, monstrous, evil, demonic - what's the appropriate adjective here? I'm at a loss.

The latest atrocity:

At Tiri, in Bint Jbeil district, is part of Israel’s self-declared buffer zone. At least four other people were killed in the strikes on the village, making it the deadliest day in southern Lebanon since the ceasefire came into effect on April 17.

Khalil worked for Al Akhbar, the Beirut-based newspaper widely considered as being editorially aligned with Hezbollah. Her killing is the latest in a series of Israeli attacks on journalists in the south.

Faraj spoke to The National about the attack, her head wrapped in a white bandage and the right side of her face bruised and swollen. “I can’t accept that Amal is gone,” she said.

After the initial strikes, the two journalists jumped out of their car and ran to something resembling a bus shelter along the road.

An hour and a half later, Faraj said, the Israeli military struck Khalil’s car, two metres from where they were standing, injuring them. The car caught fire – and so did Khalil. “I saw Amal like that, telling me, ‘Zeinab, I’m burning,’” she added.

Faraj helped her friend into a nearby building as an Israeli surveillance drone hovered above them. “She told me, ‘Don’t fall asleep, don’t leave me’,” Faraj said.

Another Israeli strike hit the building where they were hiding, causing it to collapse. “Amal was gone,” Faraj said. “And I was left alone."
