I want to ensure he receives justice. A long time has passed—years, in fact—yet neither he nor his family has seen any justice at all. A Thai man’s dream of becoming a soldier to protect his country may have come at the ultimate price: his life. I was once proud that my younger brother became a soldier, but at the same time, I felt profound sorrow over the bullying and the myriad hardships he had to endure. My father, who had served as a soldier before returning to civilian life, once said, "My son is a soldier's son, and they will look after him." Then he fell silent, as if his son now belonged to someone else.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF NOTES
Seeking justice after eight years, the family of "Nong May" (Pre-cadet Phakhapong Tanyakan)—accompanied by their lawyer—visited Parliament to submit a petition to the House Committee on Law, Justice, and Human Rights. They view this as a "final lifeline" to help unravel the mystery surrounding his death. Although the Supreme Military Court had ordered the punishment of a senior cadet for physical assault, the Royal Thai Police have remained inactive, imposing no disciplinary sanctions. Furthermore, the family remains unconvinced by the autopsy conclusion of "heart disease," given that Nong May had no prior history of the condition—and the fact that key organs can no longer be re-examined. Nong May’s mother tearfully opened up about the enduring pain and self-blame she has carried throughout this ordeal.
The story of "Nong May"—as well as the case of Tangmo, the famous actress and model who died by drowning under mysterious circumstances—is often revived to divert public attention back to past issues and cause people to lose sight of the current situation; for instance, these stories have been used to shift focus away from news about flooding. Wealthy and powerful figures can hire the media to bring these past narratives back into the spotlight. It is as if this news is being used to intimidate the public—a warning not to know too much or pry into matters, and a command to stop meddling in my private affairs; people will eventually forget about it on their own. And finally, these two true stories will be adapted into a film for Netflix, much like the movie * Khuen Bap Phrom Phiram*).Shocking case: A homeless woman was gang-raped and killed by several local villagers.
