The Fall of Saigon - 50 years later
The slogan of the Republic is "Independence – Freedom – Happiness". This slogan is also known as "Độc lập – Tự do – Hạnh phúc" in Vietnamese. As far as as I can make out, the government has come a long way towards turning these initial aspirations into real outcomes over the past 50 years of one-party rule.
I'll do a bit of scene-setting first before I get into the actual nitty-gritty of that epochal military victory as reported by the government.
April 30th, 2025, was big public holiday in Vietnam. It was the 50th anniversary of the end of the American War. It was the celebration of the country's reunification that happened on April 30, 1975. It was a marvellous experience to be amongst all the families, people young & old, walking around Hoan Kiem Lake, near the Old Quarter of the nation's capital, on that special day. The weather was fine, and crowds of family groups were out & about simply walking around to experience the collective national pride. Many were wearing red tee shirts with the yellow 5-point star, and children (including myself) holding in their hand the similar 6 x 12-inch flag sold by street vendors for 15,000 dong (about 60 US cents).
Above: billboards like this have been up all over town in the weeks leading up to April 30, 2025.

I stopped off at Kuu Coffee on on the 2 km walk to the lake. The friendly mother, Nga, who owns & operates the little shop proudly presented this commemorative English language paper for us to read.

Arriving at the lake, I noticed most folk, including teenagers & children, had a brownish newpaper in their hand or tucked under their arm. "I wonder what that paper's all about?" I was thinking to myself, sitting on the lakeside kerb, taking in the happy vibes. Then a young boy approached me, sent by his mother to practice his English, asking the time-tested conversation-starter "Where are you from?". I enjoy this type of interaction with Vietnamese kids, because I've plenty of practice with my 2 Vietnamese-speaking granddaughters here, aged 11 and 5. This boy was 7. I asked his mother using Google Translate in Conversation Mode "Tôi có thể mua tờ báo đó ở đâu?" ["Where can I buy that newspaper??]. She promptly handed me one of her 3 copies, saying it was free. I accepted gratefully, then we took a picture to remember the happy occasion on Reunification Day. On the next day at home I photographed all the pages of that government hand-out with my iPhone. I then used Lens in the Google Photos app to copy the text. The clipboard was then pasted into Google Translate, Vietnamese --> English.
The hand-out
It was a 4-page newspaper, opening up to provide 4 big wall posters measuring 33 inches [89 cm] wide x 23 inches [58 cm] tall.
Above: front page, headed Nhân Dân [People]. The capital letters under that title translate to: CENTRAL ORGANIZATION OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF VIETNAM THE VOICE OF THE PARTY, STATE AND PEOPLE OF VIETNAM
Notice the two QR codes on that page. We'll check these out later.
The left QR code heading translates to COMMAND HO CHI MINH CAMPAIGN WITH HISTORICAL ORDER
The right QR code heading translates to THE LIBERATION ARMIES CONTINUE TOWARDS SAIGON

The green upper-case heading of the left-hand-side translates to:

The 1954 Geneva Accords (or Geneva Agreements) ended the First Indochina War between France and the Viet Minh, resulting in Vietnam's temporary division at the 17th parallel, withdrawal of French troops, and scheduled reunification elections. Signed on July 21, 1954, it recognized Vietnam’s sovereignty while establishing a demilitarized zone and prohibiting foreign military interference, though the U.S. and South Vietnam did not sign.
Key Provisions and Outcomes:
Division: Vietnam was temporarily partitioned at the 17th parallel into a communist North and a non-communist South, intended only as a temporary measure.
Regroupment: French troops were to withdraw to the south and Viet Minh forces to the north within 300 days.
Elections: Nation-wide free elections were scheduled for July 1956 to unify the country.
International Control Commission (ICC): A commission consisting of Canada, Poland, and India was established to monitor the ceasefire.
Foreign Troops: The agreements stipulated that no foreign troops, military personnel, or weapons could be introduced into Vietnam.
Context and Significance:
End of French Rule: The agreements followed the decisive French defeat at Dien Bien Phu.
Signatories: Signatories included France, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North), and others, but the U.S. and the State of Vietnam (South) did not formally sign, although they promised to abide by them.
Failure of Implementation: The promised elections to reunify the country never took place, leading to the division of Vietnam and setting the stage for the Vietnam War.
The 1954 Geneva Accords are considered a major diplomatic milestone for Vietnam, affirming its sovereignty, even though they did not lead to long-term peace.

The story of Ocean Vuong (born 1988) to his mother who was Vietnamese orphan girl in Saigon. His mother in turn was the daughter of a U.S. soldier sent to Vietnam by his country to kill Viet Cong national liberation fighters. The US soldier married a poor illiterate Vietnamese woman from the paddy fields and produced 3 children with her. The US soldier abandoned his de facto Vietnamese family due to the fall of Saigon in April 1975. I wonder if the second-generation Vietnamese refugee Ocean Vuong turned out to be gay as a result in some way to having been fatherless. It’s still an open question whether a boy turning out to be gay is a result of nature or nurture. Maybe it’s a result of the interaction between both factors.
