Why Bob Dylan Matters

Case Western Reserve UniversityThat looks interesting.
Musicians have always appreciated Dylan for his genius with melodic poetry. But there's another level to his early albums. In this period he was a folk hero who smashed illusions and gave a voice to the voiceless.
A song like Times Are a Changin' resonates today with increased force. The dark satire of Highway 61 Revisited seems to have been written more for this era than the 60s.
The bitterness in A Murder Most Foul showed us that his heart is still broken by the evil of this world. He's no narcissist.
There's an interview where he says that this world is just transitional. Something you need to move on from, like a test.
If you've never really sat down and listened to him, you need to, today.
What you say and feel above is underwritten by this great documentary I've just watched, and could not stop.
It is suggested he was scared and terrified by the gunning down of the President in broad daylight.
We can see this in hindsight when he chose to put out that last year haunting expressionist anthem Murder Most Foul. I think that will be his last . . .
When you listen to these old folk music & popular music raconteurs, holding him in awe, you can appreciate how he came to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Of course as an artist who was able to do what he did for its own sake, for the sake of creation, for personal expression, he did not need the endorsement of a committee in Europe to sanctify his work. I think that was why he was initially of two minds about accepting the prize.
How would Jesus feel if Caesar in Rome decided to award him the O.R.E. (Order of the Roman Empire) "for services to religion"?
Anyway, enjoy this doco. It is captivating for anybody who lived through the 1960s
