Far-right commentator Candace Owens under scrutiny over planned New Zealand visit

Story by Ben Tomsett 3 min read

August 30, 2024

New Zealand Herald

Concerns are mounting among community groups over a potential visit by far-right commentator Candace Owens to New Zealand.

Owens recently announced a speaking tour of Australia and New Zealand, and is set to visit the country in November.

In the past, Owens has taken aim at Islam, feminism, gender minorities, climate change, the Black Lives Matter movement, and various other groups, religions, identities and movements.

In recent months, Owens has leaned into antisemitic conspiracy theories, including holocaust denial, spurned by her stance on the October 7 attacks on Israel and the ongoing war in Gaza.

SkyNews Australia reported Annetta Able, one of the few survivors of Josef Mengele's experiments on over 3000 twins during the Holocaust, is urging the Australian government deny a visa to Owens for her upcoming tour.

"I still bear the physical and emotional scars of Mengele's cruelty," Able told Sky News.

"The pain, fear, and trauma I experienced were very real and to hear someone deny these atrocities is a fresh wound to my heart and an insult to the memory of those who perished.

"I urge the Australian government to deny Candace Owens a visa."

Holocaust Centre of New Zealand chair Deborah Hart said Owens' comments about Jews tied into age-old antisemitic conspiracies.

"Candace Owens has some very wacky ideas. She says that Jews orchestrated JFK's assassination and she distorts the Holocaust, including questioning the medical experimentation in death camps. In 2022 she defended Ye (Kanye West) when he said he would go 'Deathcon 3 on Jewish people'. She believes there was no moon landing," she told the Herald.

"Indeed she seems to have an unhealthy preoccupation with Jews as she has a lot to say about a group of people that is less than .2% of the world's population.  She also has some awful things to say about the gay community and Muslims."

Hart said there had been a sharp rise in antisemitism in New Zealand, and was concerned Owens could further stoke that.

"There is a balancing act between the right to free speech, which should be protected and the right to safety and security of minority communities, which should also be protected," she said.

"The Jewish community is tiny in New Zealand and it is also vulnerable. It has of late suffered verbal threats, physical abuse and property damage."

Hart said if Owens' visit to New Zealand went ahead she should be treated "with the disdain she deserves".

"We should all just turn our backs on her. She actually is good for a sound bite, but she doesn't have much new to say that is grounded in evidence. On that basis she is pretty boring."

The New Zealand Jewish Council voiced its concern, with spokeswoman Juliet Moses saying there had been a rise in antisemitism in the country since October 7.

"Any antisemitic rhetoric that is uncritically accepted and propagated is likely to give further impetus to this, as well as deepen the divisions in our society," she said.

"Our general position is that it is only in very exceptional circumstances that the government should be determining who its citizens get to hear, even when we have concerns about their views and statements. We don't believe those circumstances exist here."

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) confirmed Owens had not yet submitted a visa application.

Should she apply, Owens would need to meet specific requirements, including a good character assessment, an INZ spokesperson said.

As a paid event, her tour would necessitate an Entertainers Work Visa, and INZ would scrutinise her application based on these criteria.

While there is no legal provision to prevent entry based solely on previously expressed opinions, INZ would consider whether she posed a risk to New Zealand's security, public order or public interest.

New Zealand has previously denied entry to Holocaust denier David Irving in 2004.

Having watched this, I have to say Candace Owens is possibly the best celebrity status role model in our world today. If you don’t have time to watch the whole thing, skip to the last 15 minutes. During this interview, she displays her integrity, she speaks from the heart, she demonstrates the impor…

An important thing to understand about Candace Owens is that she's not an intellectual. I say that not to denigrate her but to highlight that she is a person who speaks from her feelings at all times, and sometimes a little rashly.

She doesn't have a university degree. She sometimes lacks rigour in the way she analyzes topics.

For example, I found her attacks on Sigmund Freud to be simplistic and shallow. She accuses Freud of protecting child abusers and trashes his legacy. I'm not a huge fan of Freud but I also recognise that he was a genius whose ideas were foundational for the practice of psychology. Without Freud we would not have concepts like repression or the unconscious.  She condemns Freud because he did not believe the endless stories of childhood sexual seduction related to him by his patients, and concludes that he was involved in a cover up. She has apparently not looked into recovered memory syndrome (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/look-it-wa…).

Her shallow and tendentious critique of Freud has led me to be more sceptical of her overall, but she's a good speaker and makes many interesting and original observations about people and politics. She's married to a British Peer, George Farmer, whose father is a member of the House of Lords, so she doesn't need to worry too much about the career consequences of what she says. She's essentially a rich housewife with a blog. She often trash talks on people and groups. I find it entertaining but don't take her too seriously.

The reason she is labelled "far right" is because she is telling the truth about Israel. Were it not for that, I don't think anyone would be calling for her to be denied a visa in New Zealand.

Thanks for that nuanced view of YouTube influencer Candice Owens.   I have not listened to her much.

Alex Jones could also come into this category of yours, of not being an intellectual, yet having an extroardinary gift of the gab, like a standup comic.    Hitler also had this gift.

I did not know of her position on Israel,  Yes, that slur "far right"  - denoting Nazism and "white supremacy" does not seem to fit with anti-Israel pro-Palestine sentiment coming from a black woman with possibly a white soul.   I have found that it is the woke left that have the best truth and justice case for Gaza and the evil nature of far-right Zionism.

Maybe Candice Owen was sacked by the Daily Wire for her not towing the line on Israel?

The right wing (a.k.a. conservative) intellectuals such as Ben Shapiro are rabidly pro-Israel.

So it don't make much sense labelling Candice Owens "far right".

Yes you appear to be correct in your assumption that it is the Israel lobby that don't want her speaking in Australia and New Zealand.   Makes me want to hear what she has to say on Israel and Gaza.

Here it is

The far-right commentator Candace Owens left the rightwing Daily Wire website amid tensions over her alleged antisemitism and opposition to US funding of Israel’s war in Gaza.

So this is strange.  Candace Owens is labelled "far right" and the Daily Wire labelled "rightwing"

I think this is a psyop of the Israel lobby, playing around with semantics.

"Far right" means any "rightwing" person who is opposed to Israel.

"Rightwing" means a good conservative like Ben Shapiro who is rabidly pro Israel.

Therfore I presume, when it comes to Israel,  "leftwing" is OK, meaning a believer in liberal democracy.  But once you support the Palestinians, you become "far left" (i.e. woke social justice warrior).

So both "far right" and "far left" are labels used as a dogwhistle to slur anybody who supports the Palestinians in their existiantial struggle against Israel.

So we see that the truth and justice case that suports the Palestinians transcends the left/right paradigm.

This explosive interview and debate on the Piers Morgan show does confirm that it is her stance on Israel-Gaza situation that is getting her cancelled.

She must be amazingly effective, credible and influential to incur so much wrath and deplatforming from the Israel lobby

“I Am NOT A Holocaust Denier” SHOWDOWN! Rabbi Shmuley vs Candace Owens

Regular viewers of Piers Morgan Uncensored will understand the gravity of the following debate without explanation. To the unseasoned, Rabbi Shmuley and Candace Owens have maintained a bitter feud over at least two years, having accused each other of everything from hypocrisy to lying to outright bigotry. Shmuley heavily criticised Owens for her embrace of Kanye West after his antisemitic tirades. Owens has hit back, claiming that Shmuley has harassed her publicly, blackmailed her and twisted her statements to present her as a hater of Jewish people. Their personal grudges aside, the two firebrands are passionate voices for their own communities, something that Piers is eager to tap into. So finally, after years of vitriol, Piers Morgan is joined on Uncensored by both Owens and Shmuley for the first time. Their opening statements set the tone for the discussion, and no one should be surprised that they were confrontational. The two combatants by and large debate the ongoing …
